The Hammonds who were sentenced to imprisonment for arson, were released after serving their time, and then a federal court decided that their time was not enough, and required them to serve more time in a California federal prison. Which incited this uprising of constitutional militia’s going to Oregon to defend the constitution of the USA, and to let the federal government know that they have stepped outside their jurisdiction.
The occupation began after a demonstration in support of Dwight Hammond, 73, and his son Steven Hammond, 46, who were to report to California prison after a federal judge ruled that the sentences they had served for arson were not long enough under federal law.
This is the story of the fires, which were fires that were regularly practiced to help keep out invasive species. The two fires in question are from 2001 and 2006, and that the BLM had been notified before the fires were set, and the Hammonds had received permission. This doesn’t seem like “terrorism” to me.
“” Judge Hogan used his discretion under the Eighth Amendment to sentence Dwight (now 74) to three months in prison, followed by three years’ “supervised release.” Dwight’s son Steven (45), father of three, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison—also to be followed by three years’ “supervised release.” The men served their sentences starting in 2013. “
They served their sentences, but now the feds want these ranchers back in prison for up to 5 years. It’s insane.
I am not a lawyer, but this open letter to the local sheriff cites the lack of jurisdiction by the federal government, and is very interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3JqIceKh6I
